There's something fascinating about watching a dog eat a rabbit. Having caught the thing, wandered round with for a while finding a nice spot then beginning to devour it. The bunny's head went first. Little by little it's fur was sent scattering about as the insides came out for consumption. I'll put the photos up soon. Turned out to be a fun weekend. Far too much was drunk on Saturday night. Friday night's football was disected in minute detail and injury woes discussed. Next weekend should be very interesting. Also sorted out the origins of the humble pavlova. It comes from New Zealand but was named in Australia. Now I'm just sort of killing time and looking for work back in England. No doubt the cinema will be frequented a few times this week. One other good thing came out of the weekend. I now have a better room at the hostel. Instead of sharing with a French guy who left his used tissues and underwear all over the floor I now have an English girl for a roommate.

Less than two weeks now before I fly home to England. Managed to meet another mad Aussie the other night in the pub. Seemed a decent enough bloke at the start. We had a natter, a game of pool and a few beers. Then he went all weird on me. As someone who can't abide programs like Big Brother I did feel his comments that we should look up to Big Brother contestants a little on the wrong side. I don't think, as he did, that they are role models for Australian (or any) society. The guy then drifted into telling me all about his past and how he'll never achieve the fame and fortune of a BB contestant. Breaking down as he did as he told me about his time in prison after stealing an old lady's handbag. I felt by now I needed to extricate myself from his presence. I have this habit of people opening themselves up to me though. I'm not quite sure why. I was once told that I'm a good listener. A lot of the time I'll listen and do what I can to help someone but the other night I had things on my mind and just wanted a few quiet beers. Off down the Mornington Peninsula this weekend. Should be fun, as it always is. Footy tonight is in Perth so I won't be going. Instead it's a boy's night in with beer and the TV.

Wednesday. Wash day. I don't know why but I love doing laundry. Cleaning. Washing away a week's worth of grime from everything, starting again. I'd do it every day but that would just be silly. It's true. I have a washing fetish. It doesn't extend just to laundry though. Washing up after dinner is also a thrilling experience. I love doing it. Maybe it's something about water. I don't know and don't care I just know I like doing it. Not that it's all without it's perils either. I came to Australia with around 10 pairs of socks and now have 5 and a half pairs left. I've made the sacrifices to the great Laundry God. It's required throughout life. Laundry God gives you clean clothes but that comes with making the odd offering from time to time. Nor do I wash myself all the time either. I do shower every day and try and keep myself clean but not in an obsessive kind of way.

The NFL is just around the corner. The Eagles are currently playing the Steelers in a preseason game and TO is... Well, who cares where TO is. I was somewhat delighted when he signed for the Eagles last season. (I took some stick for it in Yulara but that was from a 49ers fan! Ha!) There's a strong arguement for him being the best receiver in the league at the moment. Unfortunately he's also an anooying brat who can't handle being the #2 man at the Eagles. As a result he's spit the dummy in a big way. Not only behaving like a child with team-mates (team! that's the key word) but showing no respect for authority. He wants more money, he wants all the headlines to himself. He's challenged Andy Reid, verbally attacked Donovan McNabb and claims Brad Childress antagonised him. I'd be happy if he stayed, played and behaved but I'd rather see the team do well. No player is bigger than the team he plays for. I like the standpoint the Eagles have taken though. He has the chance and opportunity to play this season, he has a very strong chance of winning a Superbowl. The Eagles won't trade him or negotiate a new contract. He has 2 choices. Play for the Eagles or don't play.

Saturday turned into a long one. Back at the Telstradome for the footy. Saints were taking on the Kangaroos. An important game for final placings as both teams had the same win-loss record. The 'roos also having recently taken to letting teams get ahead in the first half of games and coming back at them after the long break. They tried, getting back to 10 points but the better team (with some help from the dodgy umpires) won in the end. This week is also the Heritage Round in the AFL. A week where the 16 teams all wear strips from their past. Some don't look so different, some are radically altered. The Saints went back to their 1915-1918 guernsey's. A chance from the regular red-white-black to red-yellow-black which came about during the First World War. German colours were red-white-black and the St Kilda team changed the white to yellow for a few years. Dinner with my brother, sister-in-law and a couple of other friends gave rise to a few fun discussions about the antics of T.O., cricket, adverts, Melbourne's public transport, Humpty, Grand Finals and gay AFL players. I got around the opening night of the Premiership during the West Ham-Blackburn match. I had an interest in the game due to a rather beautiful female friend back in the England being a Blackburn supporter. Sadly the Hammers won 3-1. The Middlesboro-Liverpool game that followed wasn't much to write home about either. Two points dropped there. Still, it was an eventful match and in a bar full of Liverpool supporters, even if the Irish bogans were out in force. Photos from the Kangaroos-Saints match
