The Mount Vernon estate was bought by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association in 1858 from the Washington family. Since the site had fallen into disrepair, the Association began to repair and restore the Mansion and grounds. English Boxwoods crowd the entry path to Mount Vernon. These were taken as cuttings in England by Major General Henry Lee (father of Robert E Lee).
