The Wrest Point Casino Hotel first opened in 1939 under the name Wrest Point Riviera. Due to the lack of tourism in and around Hobart and Tasmania the owners applied for a casino license. A referendum was held and the Wrest Point became Australia's first casino. Thanks to the 17-storey hotel the Wrest Point remains Hobart's tallest building and does have some excellent views of the city.
