Brisbane

Originally home to the Turrbul and Jagera Aboriginals, Brisbane was first explored by Europeans in 1823 when John Oxley sailed up the Brisbane River. The area was, at first, a penal colony until 1838 when greater settlement began. Brisbane itself never became an actual city until 1925, it was an amalgamation of areas. Named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, formally governor of New South Wales at the time Queensland became a separate colony from New South Wales in June 1859. Brisbane is Queensland capital and largest city and Australia's third largest city.
